Golden State Warriors: Klay Thompson’s durability is invaluable
How crucial is Klay?
Shaun Livingston and sometimes Quinn Cook can backup Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala is the insurance for Kevin Durant, and Jordan Bell (though he has slumped a bit) can take on the responsibilities of Draymond Green.
But for Klay Thompson? There’s no true backup option.
Damion Lee needs to show reliability from beyond the arc, and Alfonzo Mckinnie’s shot has disappeared since the start of the season. Without Klay Thompson, who the Warriors are so used to being on the court and available, the reliable backup is still a mystery.
If there is any reason for Klay Thompson getting a max contract offer on day one of free agency, it is his track record of appearing in uniform for Golden State.
After all, the Dubs are a +8.7 points per 100 possessions with Thompson on the court, a number that reflects all seven of his professional seasons. The Warriors need Thompson, and Thompson might realize he needs the Warriors.
We know about his touch from three, we’ve witnessed him locking up opposing guards but do not overlook perhaps his most invaluable trait: his durability.
