Carsen Edwards
This is more a pipe dream for Golden State.
Edwards, prior to his electric NCAA Tournament run with the Purdue Boilermakers, wasn’t even supposed to be drafted. If anything he was a late, late second-round pick. In their weekly mock draft, Basketball Insiders’ Steve Kyler had Edwards being selected at No. 60.
However, that was the March 26 edition. Then, Edwards exploded for 42 points against arguably the best defense on a national platform. Now out of the tournament, Edwards can’t do much more to help his draft stock.
Teams know what they’ll get with Edwards. It’s a high-risk selection, especially given that Edwards shot under 40% during his junior season at Purdue. His low efficiency will shy teams away from him although he lit up the NCAA Tournament.
If he finds a way to fall to No. 58, he’ll certainly be gobbled up by Golden State. They may even buy a pick or trade up to see if they can snag Edwards, a move that wouldn’t be unprecedented for Golden State as they bought their way into the second round to draft Jordan Bell a few years ago.
Edwards did average 24.3 points and 3.8 threes per game. He also averaged over 35 points per game during the tourney, so clearly, the dynamic scoring ability is there. But, it’s hard to see that translating well to the next level with bigger, stronger and faster defenders.
The Schofield-Edwards combination would be a quintessential draft for the Golden State Warriors.
