Joel Embiid wants an opportunity to play alongside Stephen Curry
The Philadelphia 76ers superstar center Joel Embiid hopes he’s eventually gifted with an opportunity to play alongside two-time MVP Stephen Curry.
When you think of the most unfair combinations in basketball, the first thing that comes to mind is Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. We’ve already been exposed to that duo that has already brought two championships to the Bay Area.
What other combinations may result in an unfair accumulation of talent?
Insert All-Star center Joel Embiid and the league’s only unanimous MVP Stephen Curry.
Per NBC Sports, Joel Embiid said that he’s hoping the two can link up one day.
"“Of course I’d put myself at center,” he said. “At point guard. Hmmmm. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully we get the opportunity to play together. But I’ll choose you. I need that shooter.”"
The “you” is referring to Curry, who Embiid was talking to at the time. That said, the big man-shooter combo may never actually happen, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about how dominant they could be together.
All the Sixers are currently missing is a sharpshooting point guard. While they’re doing pretty well with Ben Simmons leading the show, an upgrade to Stephen Curry would make the Sixers offense reach new levels.
The Curry-Embiid pick-and-roll could become the most unstoppable play in the league. The options for an offense spearheaded by these two would be limitless, and with Embiid, the team’s defense would likely be at least mediocre as well.
However, for now, all this is just hypothetical thinking.
Curry is locked up for the next few years after signing a five-year supermax back during the 2017 offseason. Curry will be at least 33-years-old when his current contract expires. That said, Embiid, who is under contract till after the 2022-2023 season, is in a similar situation.
Both of these players are far too important to their respective franchise to ever be traded. We can dream though, right? At the same time, we’d have to dream that Embiid finds his way to the Bay and not the other way around.
Let’s not be too greedy though. The Dubs are already lined with superstar talent and don’t need to try to manage another high-scoring player on their roster.
