Value

If Gay signs for the just over $5 million MLE for one season, the Golden State Warriors would be getting insane value for his services. It’d likely also be a pay decrease for Gay, but for once in his career, he’d get a true shot at the title.

Never once in his career has Gay gotten out of the first round of the playoffs. He needs to find a team where he’ll be both the perfect fit and has the ability to go deep in the postseason. He’d have this in Golden State.

It seems like a win-win. Gay would be the starting small forward on a championship-level team. He can also end his career in the Bay, continuing to sign the MLE as long as he performs at a reasonably high level.

Gay could get make more. If he wanted to, he could.

After all, JR Smith had an eight-figure contract this season. If you’re not a rookie and you score double digits, you’ll have a contract over $5 million. Gay would be giving Golden State discount, but he’s a player the Dubs must at least try to snag.

The last player to sign the MLE for Golden State was DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins would likely re-sign under the MLE if he plans to return. If not, Gay should be the Dubs prime target, helping space the court on offense and guard all levels of the game on defense.
