Sign and Trade?

Just when many thought the Durant sweepstakes were finally over, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports noted that Kevin Durant could possibly engage in a sign-and-trade swap between the Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets. Brian Windhorst on ESPN added the possibility of D’Angelo Russell being incorporated into this, making the Warriors a player for Russell’s services alongside the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers.

The acquisition of Russell seems a bit far fetched, and what could be more feasible is the creation of a trade exception. Estimated possibly at $30 million, it could be an advantage later next season as Golden State gets more knowledge on Klay Thompson’s rehab. As Anthony Slater of The Athletic explains:

Perhaps the road ahead wouldn’t be as tricky as expected, and Golden State could definitely use the trade exception and keep it in their back pocket for future use.

The loss of Durant stings in possibly a way that can’t be replaced to the fullest extent. But the Warriors must have faith in this front-office that they can make the corresponding moves to keep this dynasty on pause, rather than see its end.
