Here’s the only way the Golden State Warriors sign Andre Iguodala
The Golden State Warriors can technically sign Andre Iguodala this upcoming season, but he must get traded and bought out first.
In a desperate attempt to get something out of superstar Kevin Durant’s departure, the Golden State Warriors allowed 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala to get caught in the crossfire, trading him to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies have no real intent on using Iguodala to help advance their team yet don’t want to put a high-quality forward on the buyout market. That being said, the Rockets and Mavericks are reportedly interested in trading for Iguodala.
While the Rockets will be a solid, championship-contending team, there is hope that if he’s traded to Dallas he could eventually get bought out.
Players get bought for two reasons: the team buying them out wants to give younger players a run and respects their desire to compete or the player agrees to drop part of their salary in order to secure that deal.
Making $17 million, it’d be enticing for a team to cut a deal with Iggy to pay him only say $11 million of that.
Iggy, only if traded to the Mavericks and the ensuing collapse of the Mavericks, could return to Golden State. That goes with any team. If Iggy is traded to a new team and bought out by that team, it’d be legal by the NBA rules for him to return to Golden State.
The 15-year veteran, Iguodala has one of his worst professional seasons. However, in the postseason, he came up with incredibly timely plays including a game-winning strip on superstar Damian Lillard.
Playing for Golden State the last six years of his career, the Warriors fell in love with Iggy and his style of play. His gritty defense was a staple of the Warriors five-straight NBA Finals run.
Unlike popular opinion, it may not be all over. While it likely is, fans can cling to the hope that Iggy could make a Warrior comeback if the cards fall in the right places. Given that he’ll be traded to a contending team, that seems rather unlikely.
Keep the hope though.
