The one need the Golden State Warriors must resolve soon
The Golden State Warriors have had a terrific offseason, but they still have one gaping hole to fill before the season begins again in the fall.
All-in-all, the Golden State Warriors have had one crazy, unpredictable offseason. They traded for D’Angelo Russell, traded away Andre Iguodala and watched Kevin Durant, Quinn Cook and DeMarcus Cousins all leave in free agency.
This team will have the Big 3, Russell and Looney to work with next season. But, as many of you know, 6-foot-7 Klay Thompson will be out until February after tearing his ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals.
Assuming Curry and Russell start at the one and two, who is the Warriors starting small forward? Glenn Robinson III? Alfonzo McKinnie? Although Thompson may ultimately fill that position, the Warriors lost their two most capable options at the three.
That’s where the Warriors must still provide an answer prior to the season’s start. They can’t go into the offseason starting Alfonzo McKinnie, although the team really likes the young forward’s play.
The Warriors are in quite the predicament when searching for that next forward option. Marcus Morris has already been signed and they don’t have near enough money to secure a player like Kelly Oubre Jr.
Bob Myers may not fix the problem and dive into the season opener with a player like McKinnie and just allow for Curry’s brilliance to shine. However, if we’re banking on Curry and he gets injured as he has throughout his career, the Warriors, in a deep Western Conference, could be in trouble.
The market is dry and the team won’t be adding any elite talent. Maybe, just maybe, they can fill that three spot via trade, but given their salary restrictions, that may also be difficult for the Warriors’ world-class general manager.
At the end of the day, it won’t be the worst thing to move forward with McKinnie at the three, but it is far from ideal.
