Iverson to Andre: Don’t listen to the media

Andre started his career on the 76er’s with one of the league’s all-time great point guards, Allen Iverson.

Foreshadowing how social media has affected the game today, Iverson told Iguodala to stop reading the newspapers to see what the media were saying about him.

"Allen Iverson always told me to never read the paper, which of course sounded silly to me. I had a newspaper with me all the time when I was a rookie… Until one day Allen saw me doing that and said, “Don’t read the newspaper, bro. It will mess up your game…” Certain players on our team would get branded by the press — this guy can’t shoot, this guy can’t post up — and those parts of their game would slowly deteriorate… They didn’t want to even try it in games, because they were worried about what the press would be afterwards."

I think there are more than a few players in the NBA today who could use this advice from ‘The Answer,’ spending a little less time on Twitter and Instagram, or simply caring less about what people on the internet think.

Iverson may have been onto something way back in 2004.
