Golden State Warriors: Stephen Curry will pass the torch to D’Angelo Russell
By Tony Pesta
Stephen Curry has led the Golden State Warriors for nearly a decade, but soon, he may pass the torch to D’Angelo Russell.
The Golden State Warriors transformed from league laughing stock to an all-time great dynasty. Behind the rise of a legend in Stephen Curry, the Dubs have won three championships in five years. Curry may not slow down anytime soon, but he will begin to teach his apprentice, D’Angelo Russell.
Curry became an All-Star through his own determination. Dismissed as a 3-point heavy, undersized point guard, Curry revolutionized the game of basketball. Averaging 26.1 points on 48.2 percent shooting in the last six-seasons, Curry captured two MVP Awards and reached the All-Star game in each season.
As for Russell, he finally emerged as an All-Star last year. After entering the league with high aspirations, he was exiled and deemed a failure by Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers. Shipped away to Brooklyn, Russell hounded his craft and changed his reputation.
Becoming a versatile scorer and elite playmaker, Russell played a pivotal role in helping the Nets reach the NBA Playoffs. Now, in Golden State, D-Lo will be asked to embrace his role as one of the teams leading facilitators in pursuit of a championship.
If all goes well, Russell will take full advantage of his time with the Warriors. Learning from Curry is a great way for D-Lo to take the next step in his development. Will he ever become an MVP candidate? Only time will tell.
While Curry focuses on finishing the final years of his prime on a high note, he should also spend some time building for the future. Russell can be a longterm member of the Dubs if he is capable of learning from Curry.
As the Warriors transition from one era to the next, Russell is their current cornerstone. Once Curry is gone, D-Lo will (hopefully) be there to carry the next dynasty.
