Acclimating D’Angelo Russell should be the Golden State Warriors’ number one priority.

The Golden State Warriors must work diligently to acclimate D’Angelo Russell into the lineup. The 23-year old All-Star can be a huge help for the Dubs this season if he hits the ground running.

It is important the Warriors set Russell up for instant success. With Klay Thompson nurturing a serious injury, the Dubs will need D-Lo to produce in Thompson’s absence. D-Lo’s performance through the first half of the season will have a significant impact on whether or not the Warriors reach the playoffs.

Thus far, Russell has struggled. The Warriors have only played on preseason game, but Russell’s troubles were obvious. It is clear that his role with the team is still being figured out as he appeared awkward at times on the court.

As a result, D-Lo shot just 2-of-9 from the field and scored only 4 points in 18 minutes of playing time. The Warriors were destroyed 123-101 by the Los Angeles Lakers as they returned to the drawing board.

The solution should be simple. Golden State needs to put Russell into more pick-and-roll type plays and allow him to do what he does best. His playmaking skills are what sets him apart from other guards.

Allowing D-Lo to operate with the ball in his hands and create plays for others is the best option for the Warriors. This will not only build Russell’s confidence but open up the floor for Stephen Curry.

As the preseason continues for the Warriors, look for Russell’s usage to increase. The Dubs understand that the learning curve may be steep for this young guard and giving him time to work out the kinks during the preseason is a good idea.

By the time the regular season begins, the Warriors will be expecting Russell to perform at a high level. This will be key for the Warriors as they compete for a fourth championship in six years.
