The Golden State Warriors likely won’t sign Marquese Chriss to two-way deal
If the Golden State Warriors are going to sign Marquese Chriss, which is expected, it most likely won’t be on a two-way contract.
The Golden State Warriors only originally signed Marquese Chriss to be an additional body in the team’s training camp. Well, their relationship has blossomed into so much more as players have lobbied for the team to keep him.
Likely to keep the big man, don’t expect the team to release a player on a two-way contract for Chriss. The Dubs have both those positions filled with Damion Lee and Ky Bowman, two players that’d give much-needed backcourt assistance.
The thing about two-way contracts is that they have a few stipulations. One of those is that the player can’t be with their NBA team for more than 45 days. That one is what will likely keep Marquese Chriss from being signed to a two-way deal.
If signed with Golden State, Chriss would be a solid member of the Warriors. With Kevon Looney and Willie Cauley-Stein both missing signficant time in the preseason, it seems unlikely that they’d opt to sign a big man just to only have him a short period of time.
Adding to that is the fact that Chriss has been nothing short of spectacular during the preseason.
He’s averaged 9.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Even more impressive, Chriss has shot 61% from the field. Those numbers, for a player only seeing 22.5 minutes per game, is excellent.
It was almost guaranteed that once the players started to vouche for him that’d he’d be signed. He still remains unsigned and the team only has hours left to get the deal done for him to be on the 15-man roster, but if there is going to be a deal at all, it won’t be a two-way contract.
It wouldn’t make sense to take away a player that needs to develop and give it to Chriss, who, while still young, has shown that he can be on a quality NBA roster. Chriss has earned himself a roster spot somewhere this season.
Expect that somewhere to be in Golden State, and expect to be more than a two-way deal.
