It took a minute, but Stephen Curry and D’Angelo Russell are finally showing flashes for the Golden State Warriors.

In the wake of a devastating summer, the Golden State Warriors knew they would rely heavily on their newest backcourt pairing. D’Angelo Russell and Stephen Curry have the potential to carry the franchise deep into the future.

Russell, at 23-years of age, is more than capable of becoming Curry’s predecessor. The elite playmaking guard can learn a lot from Curry. One day, the hope is that Russell will be a cornerstone of the franchise, carrying the dynasty into the next generation.

Of course, this means the two need to build a connection this season. Through two games, Warriors fans and critics everywhere had a reason for concern.

It was surprising to see the Warriors lose their first two matchups by a combined 47 points. The fact that Russell had only produced 26 points on 9-of-26 (34.6%) shooting in these games made matters even worse.

As for Curry, he wasn’t exactly a disappointment. Curry had scored 20+ points in each matchup but felt very underwhelming and was a non-factor when the Warriors needed him most. Though it had only been two games, the Dubs were desperate for an explosion from their All-Star backcourt.

Alas, D-Lo and Curry finally had their big break against the New Orleans Pelicans. The two racked up a cumulative total of 50 points and 19 assists on 18-of-38 (47.4%) shooting. It wasn’t their most efficient performances but it was a flash of greatness nonetheless.

To no surprise, the Warriors captured their first victory behind the success of their backcourt. There is no telling how impactful this duo will be moving forward for Golden State.

As the season progresses, look for these two to grow more comfortable together. Once Russell gets a feel for the rest of the team, his assist numbers will further increase from the current 6.0 per game rate he is at now.

This game was an inspirational one for the Dubs. Though it was brief, it is a sign of good things to come.
