Through the Golden State Warriors’ first ten games, they’ve sadly cemented themselves as one of the worst two teams in the NBA.
At the end of the day, it’ll honestly come down to a race between the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors for the league’s worst team. But, given the new lottery setup, it may not matter that much.
After all, the Pelicans weren’t a top-three team in terms of top overall selection probability last season but they were the ones to come out with Zion Williamson. That said, you can’t necessarily count on being bad to land you the top overall pick.
However, the Warriors haven’t been tanking for the pick.
They are, sadly, just that bad this season with many of their crucial stars players having been sidelined the bulk of the season. The team’s Big 3, which ignited the dynasty that we know today, have all missed multiple games.
Klay Thompson will likely be out all season, Curry won’t be back till at least the very beginning of February, and who knows when Green, a player on a minutes and games restriction, will return. It may appear like they’re tanking because they are certainly taking every precaution with their stars.
It’s a smart decision, but it’s still not the most glamorous call since some paid big money for multi-year seats in the Chase Center. They’ll be expected full return on that lofty price next season when the team bounces back.
For now, the Warriors are 2-8 through their first ten games. They are tied only with the Knicks who also have a pitiful .200 win percentage. But, the Knicks are in the East so their schedule will generally be lighter over the next several months.
The Warriors do have a better roster than New York even when banged up. D’Angelo Russell did just drop 52 points. It’s just that many of the West’s top teams have numerous threats, not just Russell and the occasional outstanding moment from rookie Eric Paschall.
Overall, we may see movement closer to the trade deadline, but if there is, it will be for the long-term benefit of this team. This year has already been given up on, and Steve Kerr should understand that.
