The Golden State Warriors have no need to keep players on the last year of their contract, making Alec Burks the perfect trade target for opposing teams.

There’s no denying this season hasn’t started off as the Golden State Warriors had hoped. After being annihilated by the Kings last night, the Warriors remain in dead last in the Western Conference standings.

By the time the trade deadline nears, the Warriors will have no chance to make the playoffs. They’ll then have no need to keep players that are on the last year of their contracts. That said, only a handful of Warriors come to mind as low-cost, high-value options.

Alec Burks is one of them. He’s on a veteran’s minimum. Having a career season with the Golden State Warriors, Burks has rebounded well after injuries initially sidetracked a career that was one the rise.

The 2011 lottery pick is averaging 15.6 points per game, the most of his career. At 6-foot-6, he has several commendable traits, including his scoring and size, that should make him of value to a contender with a weak second unit.

On top of that, Burks is making 1.5 threes per game on 36%. He’s been shooting well from downtown and has secured his place as one of the Warriors’ best scoring options. He’s also .3% away from 90% from the line.

For Burks, the market should be hot.

A team like the Boston Celtics should have at least some interest. At the top of the Eastern Conference, the Celtics are among the bottom two teams in bench scoring. That unit averages just 26.9 points per game.

The need for a Burks-like player, his on-court traits, and, lastly, his cost makes him a quality trade candidate. While it’s unknown what Golden State would ask for Burks, a second-round pick or a few of them may be enough.

The Warriors could lose Burks then add Ky Bowman or Damion Lee to the roster. Either way, they could certainly get something for Burks, and they might as well do it as he’ll likely be looking for a better contract this summer anyway.
