Golden State Warriors: There’s reportedly a strong market for D’Angelo Russell
The Golden State Warriors likely won’t trade point guard D’Angelo Russell, but there is reportedly a strong market for his services.
While many don’t foresee the Golden State Warriors dealing D’Angelo Russell, his market is apparently still hot. The star point guard is a mere 23 years old and is currently under contract for the next three seasons.
If you give him high-quality shooters and solid perimeter defenders to mask his weaknesses, Russell’s proven that he can elevate a team to a playoff level. He did so last season as the Brooklyn Nets main offensive playmaker.
Now 5-24, the Warriors season is all but over as far as playoff aspirations are concerned. That said, they’ll soon take their focus towards next season with the trade deadline nearing in the next few weeks.
With that in store, what’s the market for Russell if they plan to deal him? Well, apparently, Russell could bring in a quality player and a first-round pick, the quintessential combination for a team like Minnesota.
“Multiple league executives told The Chronicle that Russell could fetch a first-round pick and a solid rotation player,” Connor Letourneau reported. This combination is exactly what many predicted the market being for Russell.
Russell is averaging just under 22 points per game. Last season, he averaged 21.1 per game, and he’s just above that, hitting a career-high with the Warriors. He’s doing so with far fewer weapons than he had with the Nets last season.
Again, the Warriors have no plan to deal Russell, but if they can bring back the Minnesota Timberwolves unprotected first-round pick and a player like Robert Covington, there’s no reason to not deal the All-Star guard.
The Warriors, who will likely have a top-three pick, do not need Russell to be their future anymore. With the pick and Eric Paschall’s development, they may have more leverage to play for the now and bulk up their roster for when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are both healthy next season.
The Dubs should end up keeping Russell through the season, but his trade market is apparently still there.
