The Golden State Warriors aren’t out of the playoff picture just yet.

Believe it or not, despite a horrific start to the 2019-20 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors can still sneak into the playoffs.

The Dubs sit with a 9-28 record, the worst in the league. The loss of two superstar players in Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant plus an injury to Klay Thompson has decimated the Warriors.

Still, the franchise is only six games back from the eight-seeded San Antonio Spurs. With Curry’s return on the horizon, it is not out of reach to say the Warriors could finish the year strong and overcome their early struggles.

The team itself has already been looking better. D’Angelo Russell is coming into his own as a leader, averaging 28.2 points across his last five games as the Dubs went 4-1 during this stretch.

Since then, Russell has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. The Warriors have dropped five straight games and face the toughest schedule in the NBA moving into the second half of the season.

Reaching the postseason isn’t unimaginable but it would take an incredible run from this squad. A run that may not be worth the trouble.

Let’s start with the amount of effort it would take to overcome the hole they have dug themselves. It would take another MVP level performance from Curry to lift the Dubs back into the playoff picture.

Though Curry is certainly capable of playing at this level, there is no reason to put more wear and tear on the 30-year-old guard at this stage in his career. Even if the Dubs reached the postseason, they would have little chance of winning anything meaningful.

Most importantly, reaching the postseason eliminates the Dubs chances of securing the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. This pick could play a pivotal role in helping the Warriors remain relevant in the future and sacrificing it for another playoff berth doesn’t seem worth it.

The Warriors might have what it takes to reach the postseason, but this shouldn’t be their goal.
