The Golden State Warriors traded Willie Cauley-Stein, opening up ample opportunity for Omari Spellman to prove his value.

It’s trade season for the Golden State Warriors, and Omari Spellman may be the main beneficiary. He’ll step into the spotlight with Cauley-Stein, who was averaging 22.9 minutes per game, now in Dallas.

Spellman is having a terrific sophomore season.

He’s averaging 7.8 points per game, and what’s even more impressive is that he’s shooting 4% better than he did as a rookie. Now at 44%, Spellman has consistently improved his play, something necessary for young players looking to make a name for themselves.

Another huge plus is his three-point shooting.

Spellman has taken the next step there as well. He’s shooting over 41% from downtown, albeit averaging only 0.9 threes per game. Nonetheless, in those attempts, he’s shooting a terrific percentage.

He’s started just three games and is at just 17.8 minutes per game. With Cauley-Stein out, he’ll have the opportunity to step up and improve his game. Spellman has a guaranteed contract for next season and then a team option following that season.

The Warriors initially signed Cauley-Stein because they weren’t loaded in their frontcourt. With even less depth now that he’s in Dallas, Spellman will have the ability to both prove himself and to increase his value.

Once healthy, the Warriors will be a championship-contending team. If Spellman can prove himself like Kevon Looney did during the team’s 2019 postseason run, he’ll have the ability to continue his career with one of the league’s best organizations.

The time is now for Omari Spellman, and the former first-round pick should understand that if he doesn’t step up, he may never see that next big contract.

He’s not expected to be a star, but if Spellman can be the role man that D’Angelo Russell needs, he’ll be a contributor for a long time.
