D’Angelo Russell’s time with the Golden State Warriors has come to an end prior to him finishing a complete season with the team.

Just two hours before the NBA trade deadline, ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Golden State Warriors traded D’Angelo Russell, Jacob Evans, and Omari Spellman to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In return, the Warriors will receive forward Andrew Wiggins, a 2021 top-3 protected first-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick.

Wiggins has struggled to fulfill the expectations he came into the NBA with, but has been a very solid scorer throughout his career, averaging 20+ points in three out of his six seasons. At only 24 years old, Wiggins will likely be a part of the Warriors future, as he is under contract through the 2022-23 season.

Russell was just signed this offseason via sign-and-trade with the Brooklyn Nets, but was the subject of trade rumors from the moment he became a Warrior. Rumors swirled for days leading up to the deadline that Russell could be on the move, with the Timberwolves seeming like the ideal location for him to end up.

D-Lo carried the offensive load for the Warriors this season, averaging 23.6 points per game while taking almost 20 shots a game.

After making two trades in just twelve hours, the Warriors have torn down the structure of their roster this year, moving on from three of their top five scorers. Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks were sent to the Philadelphia 76ers last night in exchange for three second round picks.

Wiggins is a more natural forward, and helps clear up the log jam that the Warriors have in their backcourt when all are healthy. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins will be a much smoother 1-3 for the future.

Paired with a Draymond Green and a high draft pick this offseason, the Warriors will likely be able to return to their normal status as NBA Finals contenders in the 2020-21 season.
