The Golden State Warriors could look to bring back forward Omari Spellman, if he’s waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, due to NBA rules, the Golden State Warriors couldn’t immediately re-sign him once he passes waives. The Dubs would have to wait until the offseason to pursue him as a potential free agent.

Regardless of his status, the Warriors, if they can, should make a run to return the second-year power forward. Spellman had been playing well as a Warrior and is worthy of a second stint on hopefully what will be a championship level team.

The potential for Spellman to be bought out was first brought to light by Darren Wolfson.

In 49 games, Spellman was averaging 7.6 points per game. While he wasn’t overly impressive, all the trend from his numbers point to an improved sophomore season, and there’s no reason to believe he cannot continue to become more efficient.

That’s the main drawback from Spellman. A big man shooting 43% from the field isn’t necessarily ideal. Yes, at the end of the day, he’s consistently improving, and for a 22-year-old former first-round pick, that’s all you can ask for.

The most impressive part of Spellman’s game has been his efficient three-point shooting. Averaging almost 40% from downtown with just about one made three per game should be crucial if brought back to Golden State.

As it currently stands, Spellman would return as a good addition to the team, but he’d have to be waived as the former Villanova Wildcat is still technically under contract for two more seasons with a team option on the second one.

The Golden State Warriors will be in need of cheap contributors to come off the bench against next season, and Spellman, like Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III were this season, could be the answer to that important issue.
