The Golden State Warriors have went from dominating ratings for five straight seasons to seeing the second-largest year-over-year drop.
Currently the Western Conference’s worst team, this news really shouldn’t come as a surprise for the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors have struggled with injuries throughout the bulk of the season, and with Klay Thompson’s return still up in the air and Stephen Curry’s hopefully in the next few weeks, the time to change those ratings may be in the near future.
For now, the Warriors are sitting at 12-43. With 27 games remaining, their ratings are down 66 percent from last season according to Awful Announcing via the renowned Sports Business Journal.
This update is something we already knew, and with RSN down across the board, the Warriors are just one of many teams that have struggled to bring in viewership this season. Thankfully, they have an excuse though.
Curry and Thompson, their two best players, being out means that the team has struggled to put a product on the court that people want to watch. The team, if we’re brutally honest, just isn’t that enjoyable to watch on a game-by-game basis.
While D’Angelo Russell did give some hope, the Warriors playoff chances, and their ratings, dropped the fourth game of the season when Curry exited early with a broken left hand. For now, the Warriors’ diehard fanbase will get a full dose of Andrew Wiggins.
Rookie forward Eric Paschall and three-time All-Star Draymond Green combine with Wiggins to help make the Warriors more watchable, but the numbers speak for themselves as far as their ability to drive the ratings go.
The Warriors do have hope on the horizon as, at full strength, they’ll return to one of the NBA’s best teams in the 2020-2021 season. Add on a projected top-five draft pick, and this team will be ready for another championship run in the near future.
