There is no point in entertaining the thought anymore, Klay Thompson will not play for the Golden State Warriors this season.

It has been roughly eight months since Klay Thompson hit the deck with a torn ACL in the midst of a run for the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals. The five-time All-Star has been sidelined ever since and should officially be ruled out for this season.

Earlier in the year, Thompson told reporters that he would be happy to play this season but will remain patient. With less than 30 games remaining in the season, the Warriors would be better off sitting Thompson.

ACL injuries can be career-threatening. Even though Thompson’s playstyle relies more on skill than athleticism, there is no doubt that it takes a ton of lateral quickness for him to be as effective as he is on defense.

Rushing Thompson back to the court is risky and serves no purpose. The Warriors are far from being title contenders and don’t have any need to be competitive right now.

Sitting Klay is for more than just precaution. The Warriors currently sit at the bottom of the league standings and are tied for the top odds to win the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery. Adding both Thompson and Stephen Curry would ultimately push the Warriors up the standings and risk them losing out on the top pick.

In a way, this injury might be a good thing for Thompson. His body was in much need of rest after competing in five straight NBA Finals and an entire season off plus the summer will help him return in great shape.

The Warriors have to be setting their eyes on the 2020-21 NBA season. In order to maximize their chances of winning another title, it would be best for them to officially rule Thompson out from rejoining the team this season.
