Golden State Warriors react to coronavirus, NBA suspends further play
NBA suspends play just hours after Golden State Warriors announced they’d play spectator-less basketball against Brooklyn.
As public fear heightens over COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, the Golden State Warriors had decided to play with no fans. Well, that didn’t last long as the game will no longer take place and the NBA has now suspended play.
Before Jazz star Rudy Gobert was diagnosed, the plan was to continue with play. They would be the first team in the NBA to go spectator-less for a performance, but surely many teams wouldn’t be too far behind, and, as we now know, the NBA, as a whole, has suspended play.
The Warriors were slated to be on a five-game road trip and return in late March so maybe this suspension is coming at a good time so the team can stay home and well-rested, an offseason-like feel.
The Warriors were planning to do this in submission to an announcement from the city of San Francisco stating that all events with crowds of 1,000 or more are banned until further notice. This has been quite the development and has even brought an announcement from President Trump as well.
This announcement comes simultaneously with the NCAA announcing that the 2020 Men and Women’s National Tournaments will also be played in virtually empty arenas. Just a mere five days before Selection Sunday, men’s and women’s basketball teams alike will have to prepare to play in a ghost town.
These next few weeks in sports will be interesting to see how the competition is altered with no one but team personnel present for the NCAA. It will also be telling how the NBA will handle its continued suspension.
“Home court advantage” is a known factor of the game, that is known to energize the team in certain situations. With this being said, there would be no surprise if the level of competition declined and if there were not as many March Madness upsets when teams are forced to lay it all out on the court for themselves, rather than leave it on the court for thousands cheering right there with them.
As for the NBA, we’ll stay updated on major developments.
