The Golden State Warriors, if they are awarded the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, appear to be targeting Georgia freshman Anthony Edwards.

Both having missed over 50 games this season, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson’s injuries doomed the Golden State Warriors’ season from the start. Curry broke his hand in the fourth game while Thompson tore his ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals.

While the team continued to fight on a nightly basis, retaining their 2020 first-round pick will end as one of the only silver linings to this forgettable season. That and the development of Eric Paschall is basically all this team will take away from the season.

That said, what they do with that pick will be equally as important as retaining it.

The options are endless, especially if they opt to put it on the market for the highest bidder, and while James Wiseman and LaMelo Ball have virtually been already ruled out, the Warriors may have their eyes set on one player, that is, if they don’t trade the pick.

That player is Anthony Edwards. According to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, Edwards would be the pick if they didn’t find a suitable trade offer.

“If the Warriors land the No. 1 pick in the draft, they’ll be open to trading it. But if Golden State doesn’t receive a worthy offer, it would likely take (Anthony) Edwards with the top selection, according to a league source.”

At the collegiate level, Edwards led the Georgia Bulldogs for one season.

Averaging 19.1 points per game, Edwards showed off his explosiveness several times by either putting up monster, highlight-reel dunks or just being an offensive cannon with a 33-point half.

While he was inefficient on some nights in college, Edwards ended the season averaging 2.3 triples per game, a skill set the Warriors would love to continue to develop. One also must remember, Edwards was counted on for the bulk of Georgia’s offensive firepower.

However, Edwards is a risky pick and not a surefire star like Zion Williamson or even Ja Morant, one reason the Warriors would opt to trade out of the top overall spot.
