Assuming the Golden State Warriors hold on to their $17 million trade exception from Andre Iguodala, they could pursue Marcus Smart.

The Golden State Warriors made a tough decision to trade Andre Iguodala last summer but this move potentially opened up $17 million dollars worth of cap space for this season. With this money, the Warriors may be able to acquire Marcus Smart.

Anthony Slater of The Athletic has been keeping tabs on which players the Dubs are targeting this summer and Smart is perhaps the most interesting prospect to be named. Using the money that Iguodala freed up, Smart can effectively become the new Iguodala.

Though very different players the two share similar qualities. Both are scrappy defenders and ultimately buy into whatever the team system is. Smart and Iggy are two players who successfully put their egos aside and work to keep things running smoothly for their entire squad.

Smart has been a pivotal member of the Celtics in the last few years. His versatility as a defender and playmaker has made him incredibly valuable to Boston. Because of this, a trade is unlikely.

However, if the Warriors pulled it off, it would be an absolute game-changer. Smart isn’t going to become a deadly 3-point shooter but he will strengthen the Dubs supporting cast. This season, Smart is averaging 13.5 points, 4.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game.

He is undersized but his muscular frame makes up for his lack of height. He would easily be one of the team’s best perimeter defenders and brings the same type of competitive fire that makes Draymond Green so effective.

In order to acquire Smart, the Warriors would likely have to offer up one of their upcoming first-round draft picks. This is a risky move but might pay dividends if Smart can help contribute to a title within the next few years. Keep an eye out for potential trade rumors this summer.
