NBA executives want the date of the currently-scheduled June 25 draft changed, and that would have a positive impact on the Golden State Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors will likely have a top-three pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. The only team out of playoff contention when the league started their hiatus due to COVID-19, the Warriors don’t have much to play for.

Their front office will be busy with other issues, something they haven’t done in the last few seasons — draft in the lottery. With a 15-50 record, the Warriors will likely enter the offseason with the highest odds for the top overall pick.

However, they’ll have to take that pick without much face-to-face interaction with potential prospects. They may not get the workouts with players like LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards or James Wiseman like typical teams in the lottery would.

Seeing those players in-person could make all the difference, and while that might not be a reality, they may be able to secure a bit more time as many important league executives are seeking the June 25 draft to be pushed back over a month.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Jonathan Givony, several league executives are stepping up and asking for the draft to be pushed back into at least August.

"Multiple top team executives expressed to ESPN their belief that shifting the draft date would give organizations more time to salvage the essential elements of the pre-draft process, possibly allowing for in-person workouts, interviews and medical evaluations of prospects that current social distancing and shelter-in-place guidelines make impossible."

Before the Warriors know what they’ll want to do with the pick, they’ll need to know where they’re drafting, and with the draft lottery typically in mid-May, it seems unlikely for that to start on time as we aren’t even confident the virus has peaked in the United States.

If that’s pushed back, you can almost guarantee that we’ll see the draft also put to a later date. But, with the league not planning to resume for at least a month or two, there’s no reason to think the draft won’t eventually be pushed into the early fall months as well.
