If the Golden State Warriors manage to win the 2020 NBA Draft lottery, their pick could become a valuable trade asset.

Eventually, the world will go back to normal and the league will hold their lottery to determine the order of the 2020 NBA Draft. Surprisingly, the Golden State Warriors have a lot riding on the outcome of this lottery.

The Warriors aren’t in desperate need of a franchise cornerstone. Stephen Curry is still in his prime and a strong supporting cast of Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins is enough to be competitive.

Nonetheless, landing the top pick in the upcoming draft gives the Dubs a chance at potentially swapping with another team to acquire more helpful assets.

The 2020 NBA Draft class appears to be weak. This means the value of having a high pick is increased as the talent drops off significantly after the top five prospects. Winning the No. 1 overall pick puts the Warriors in a position of power.

There are a number of options the Warriors would have if they secured the first pick. They could trade down in the draft and acquire more picks to widen their chances of finding a reliable prospect. Or, they could look for a package of future first round picks to bet on a stronger draft class next year.

Above all else, they could use the No. 1 overall pick to pull in a quality role player that can help them compete for a title immediately. Names such as Marcus Smart and Dennis Schroder come to mind as Andre Iguodala‘s $17 million dollar trade exception will help open up cap space to sign one of them.

This would help the Dubs much more than drafting a rookie. The Warriors want to capitalize on the last few years of Curry’s prime and win another championship before the window is closed for good. Trading the top pick is their best route to building another title-contending team.
