Maverick Carter has proven again that Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is one of the NBA’s most underrated defenders.

Maverick Carter appeared on Bleacher Reports Uninterrupted to talk basketball with Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green. During their conversation, Carter had some criticism for Stephen Curry‘s defensive capabilities.

“The world knows Steph (Curry) can’t f–king play defense. I’m 38 — haven’t played a decent game of basketball in 18 years — Steph would have trouble guarding me,” Carter said.

He later explained that though Curry is an excellent off-ball defender, it is up to Green and Klay Thompson to cover up for Curry in every other aspect defensively.

In typical Curry fashion, he chose to take the high road rather than go back and forth with Carter. The two-time MVP simply stated that those who know what they are talking about will speak facts and truth.

The reality here is that Curry has a brilliant basketball mind that carries over to the defensive end. Though he lacks the physical build needed to be an elite defender he more than makes up for it with his IQ.

Curry is far from being a lockdown defender. In all honesty, he may be below league average in terms of defense. However, there is no arguing that Curry is a talented off-ball defender as he led the league in steals during his second MVP season.

Furthermore, Curry has shown to hold his own when matched up against elite talent. Yes, Thompson and Green are usually responsible for covering the other team’s best players but there aren’t many instances in which Curry has become a detriment to the team defensively.

Carter is flat out wrong about Curry. To be frank, the Warriors wouldn’t have won three championships last decade if it was that easy to attack Curry on defense.
