While we wait for the NBA season to resume, let’s analyze why Andrew Wiggins is an expendable asset for the Golden State Warriors.

In a trade that we all saw coming eventually, the Golden State Warriors shipped D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and a pair of future NBA Draft picks. This was one of the biggest blockbuster deals the Dubs have made in quite some time but it may not be their last.

Whether they want to admit it or not, the franchise is scratching for a chance to compete for another title. They have all of the necessary pieces in place with a rejuvenated tiro of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. All they need now is to build a supporting cast capable of making a deep playoff push.

Currently, their best-supporting piece is Wiggins himself. The 2015 Rookie of the Year is averaging 21.8 points this season and could find a bright future as a slasher for the Dubs. He is at his best when he is attacking the rim and Golden State’s spacing could help him play to that strength.

However, the Warriors would still be better off attempting to trade Wiggins. His skill set isn’t something that is too difficult to find elsewhere and there are cheaper options available.

The Warriors won’t be asking Wiggins to take on a major responsibility. Mostly, he will be needed to score consistently as a third option and defend at a reliable rate. Aside from that, Wiggins will be nothing more than a role player. A role player that is set to make over $90 million dollars over the next three seasons.

His hefty contract will make it difficult for him to be moved but the right deal is certainly out there. It is up to the front office to find a team that is willing to take a chance on the 24-year old.

This would be the best option for the Warriors who would be better off with a collection of talented bench players rather than dedicating a massive amount of money to Wiggins for the next few years.
