Golden State Warriors: Delayed season will decrease value of draft pick
By Tony Pesta
Finishing this season and delaying the next one could have unexpected effects on the Golden State Warriors 2020 NBA Draft pick.
As the NBA determines a way to properly conclude this season, next season will likely suffer from a significant delay that will decrease the value of the Golden State Warriors‘ first round 2020 NBA Draft pick.
The upcoming draft class already appears to be underwhelming. Things could change, but the possibility of finding a future superstar in this pool seems to be slim. Therefore, it’s no surprise the Dubs have been open to trade talks for their pick.
Before the season came to a halt, the Dubs had the worst record in the league and held the highest chance of winning the draft lottery. The number one pick is valuable to any franchise but feels less important to Golden State as they have their eyes on competing for another championship as soon as next year.
Inexperience will hurt the team
Finding a way to implement a high-caliber rookie into a championship-contending team is always going to be challenging. The Warriors don’t appear to be thrilled at the idea of giving a sizeable role to a 20-year-old during their run to a title.
To make matters worse, a delayed season would mean less time for a rookie to develop. Sure, this extended time off gives each prospect time to train but nothing can simulate playing real games against NBA competition.
It’s said that every rookie hits their ‘wall’ at some point in their first season. It would be disastrous if the Dubs’ rookie fell into a slump just when the team needed him most in the playoffs.
Because of this, the value of having this upcoming pick is quickly diminishing for the Warriors. Thankfully, other franchises should still have an interest in acquiring a top pick. Because of this, the Dubs need to be looking for potential trading partners as soon as possible.
