3. Prospect for the future
Most teams in the lottery are looking to strike gold and land a prospect that can carry their franchise for years to come. Though this isn’t the Golden State Warriors‘ main goal, it is certainly something they would appreciate.
The current dynasty is teetering on the edge of doom right now. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are entering their last leg and there is no telling how much longer this trio can keep the Warriors in championship contention.
This is the Warriors’ first chance since 2012 to select in the lottery. With this opportunity comes the ability for the Dubs to find their next star. Playing behind the likes of Curry and Thompson can only benefit a young prospect but it would require their cooperation.
It’s unusual for a top draft pick to accept a minimal role in their first season. Prospects like LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards have the highest ceilings but might not feel comfortable on the bench for their rookie seasons. But, if they can buy into the system until its time to shine, this could be a longterm fit for both parties.
