It’s a match made in heaven. The Golden State Warriors need to package their upcoming NBA Draft pick with their $17 million dollar trade exception.

Speculation will continue to grow as the Golden State Warriors weigh their options in the offseason. The upcoming NBA Draft grants an opportunity to find the next star of the franchise. Or, the potential No.1 overall pick can be used in tandem with their trade exception to haul in another piece to the championship puzzle.

The Dubs aren’t ready to call it quits and begin a full rebuild. And, who could blame them? While they may have finished as the worst team in the league last season, the roster will look totally different next year. It isn’t what it used to be but the Warriors core is still strong.

With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins, the Dubs will be a dark horse candidate to win the title. One more sizeable piece could push them over the top and make them favorites to win it all.

The only issue is, the Dubs don’t have much financial freedom to add any more talent. They are locked into multiple big contracts. The most they can free up to sign a free agent is roughly $6 million with their mid-level exception. This could help them add depth but it’s unlikely they sign a game-changer for such a low amount.

Where they can really make a splash is their $17 million dollar trade exception. Golden State can find a number of talented in this price range. They should be able to negotiate for a few quality players even without including their upcoming pick. But, throwing in their pick makes it even sweeter. The Warriors have a chance to strike gold by utilizing their trade exception and top-five pick to haul in another notable player.

The draft is set to take place on October 16 while the expiration date for the Dubs TE comes about a week later. It makes perfect sense for the Dubs to use these assets in tandem to maximize their chances of hanging up another banner next year.
