The Golden State Warriors have a few spots to fill on their top-tier roster this offseason, and they’re rumored to be prioritizing backup point guard.

There’s no denying the 2019-2020 season was a failure for the Golden State Warriors.

Sure, there are some silver linings that we could take away. Eric Paschall broke up, Jordan Poole found his rhythm, but at large, the Dubs, at 15-50, were an embarrassment for a team that had been to five straight NBA Finals.

What is clear is that this team is going to return to Finals contention next season. The immediate turn around is because Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry will be healthy. The duo combined for five games this past season, one reason the totaled just 15 wins.

However, there will be more pieces to the puzzle still be placed for the Dubs to become a top contender. The Dubs could use better depth just about all over and especially behind the team’s aging backcourt.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (subscription required), finding a quality backup for two-time MVP Stephen Curry will be among the team’s top offseason priorities. It’s clear this team wants to lower Curry’s minutes as he’s starting to get over a year into his 30s.

The Warriors have one backup point guard that’ll likely be on the roster next season. Ky Bowman, who played his first season in the league this year, played in 45 games, starting 12. D’Angelo Russell started the bulk of games at point guard before being traded.

Originally on a two-way deal, Bowman excelled, earning a spot on the 15-man roster. He should be back, but the team may want even more from the player expected to fill the void ultimately left by Shaun Livingston.

That player could be a rookie if the team feels LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Haliburton or Tyrese Maxey have the leadership qualities to take over the second unit. It’s more likely going to be a free agent signing that comes in and fills that role though.

With a $17.2 million Andre Iguodala-created trade exception and a mid-level exception to use, this team will have the ability to improve even with being restricted by the cap. Goran Dragic or Jeff Teague would both be solid additions for the Golden State Warriors.

There will be a plethora of free agents for the team to choose from. That said, knowing backup point guard is a priority will give fans something to look forward to as the offseason theoretically starts to set in already.
