The Golden State Warriors are watching closely as the San Antonio Spurs approach a full rebuild, lending the potential for a firesale on veteran players.

The Golden State Warriors are in a tough position. It’s vital that the front office adds more talent to this roster if they want to increase their chances of winning another title, but the franchise is stifled for cap space. Only the $17 million dollar trade exception and $6 mid-level relief offer them salvation.

This forces the Dubs into becoming scavengers. They will need to keep a close eye on teams that are on the fringe of rebuilding and pounce on the opportunity to poach a few veteran players during the firesale. The San Antonio Spurs stand as the most likely target for this scenario.

San Antonio spent nearly two decades in title contention before the Gregg Popovich train finally slowed down. Now, the franchise is facing the reality of missing the postseason for the first time since 1997. With this could come the final blow to a few of their veteran players, offering a chance for the Warriors to swoop in.

Rudy Gay and Patty Mills are the Spurs’ most expendable players. Both are quality, experienced guys who play their role to perfection. But, they don’t serve much purpose moving forward for the Spurs if rebuilding is the goal. It would benefit both franchises to make a swap.

The Warriors don’t have much to offer but a package of Kevon Looney and a second-round draft pick could be enough to acquire either one of them, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Gay adds depth to the wing position, an area of need for the Warriors. He is a versatile scorer and reliable defender/rebounder. Meanwhile, Mills also serves a purpose as a trustworthy backup to Stephen Curry.

Acquiring either one of Gay or Mills would help the Dubs in their pursuit of another title. A disappointing finish in Orlando might force the Spurs hand and cause a rebuild. In this case, the Warriors need to become active and make a deal.
