Derrick Jones Jr.

The young athletic Derrick Jones Jr. is up for a new contract. Finally starting to come into form as a true player and less as a pure athlete, Jones Jr. may be up a decent-sized contract this offseason. He’s also a reason why the Heat have performed so well this season.

The 23-year-old is averaging a career-high 8.9 points per game. Shooting just over 51%, Jones Jr. has been a capable small forward for the Heat. The team is better than their opponent when Jones Jr. is on the court.

Jones Jr. hasn’t been great from downtown which may hurt his value in the market. He’s shooting under 30% from deep but is shooting over 60% from the field, so clearly Jones Jr. is more efficient and it’s understandable given how easy it is for him to get to the rim.

After going undrafted, Jones Jr. will enter his fifth season in the NBA next year. For Golden State, he’d be a welcome addition and be able to enhance their second unit, but I’d be shocked if the team targets him unless he really proves his worth in the bubble.

It’s worth keeping an eye on him, and if you combine his youth and room for growth, the Warriors may be willing to take the time to develop his skill.
