Tremont Waters, Boston Celtics

In a quick glance at Tremont Waters, all Warriors fans would question, “who?” You might have never heard his name, but you should be familiar with him — especially after the Warriors made known that they need a backup point guard.

Last year in his rookie year with Boston, Waters only averaged a mediocre 3.3 points, 0.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.5 steals per game. Those are stats that would make you question adding him to the Warriors rotation and rightfully so.

However, let’s look at his summer league stats with the Celtics. In 24 minutes that he averaged per game, Waters scored 11.2 ppg on 34% shooting. He also averaged 4.8 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. Those stats speak differently.

The Warriors are looking to add a backup point guard, and while Waters hasn’t shown too much, he could be a solid addition. Waters is certainly more of a project than the team would like, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t make a good backup.

If given the chance, Waters most likely can put up those Summer League stats in the NBA. He doesn’t need to be a star; he just needs to spell Stephen Curry with quality minutes. That is a reason enough to give Waters a look in free agency.
