Many assume the Golden State Warriors will end up trading their 2020 NBA Draft pick. Ex-coach PJ Carlesimo seems to agree this is the best move.

The Golden State Warriors have plenty of questions to address this offseason. None are more pressing than their position in the upcoming NBA Draft. Will the Dubs trade their top-five pick? Or, will they use this as an opportunity to build for the future while also being competitive in the present?

No one seems to be sure just yet. There are valid reasons for both sides here. However, ex-coach PJ Carlesimo has voiced his preference for the team to trade the pick. Talking on KNBR 680, Carlesimo had this to say:

"“There’s not a Zion (Williamson). There’s not somebody that’s really gonna impact the Western Conference race,If they’re able to get a veteran who can come in and contribute — yeah, I think that’s the way to go”"

Carlesimo has a point. There doesn’t appear to be a once-in-a-generation talent entering this year’s draft. While some are high on LaMelo Ball, it’s riskier than ever to bet big on any prospect this year. This alone could be enough reason for the Dubs to trade the pick instead of using it for themselves.

Carlesimo went on to state that the Dubs already have enough talent on the roster, all they need to do now is add supporting pieces around Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

"“Golden State is very, very close,” he said. “Bob and Steve are gonna know what’s available for them that literally is gonna make a difference next year and the following year”"

This is also true. The Dubs are in a good position to compete for a title right now, something that could change in a heartbeat. The franchise should capitalize on this window while they still have a chance and worry about the future later.
