Ranking Golden State Warriors’ best confirmed offseason targets
By Tony Pesta
4. Patty Mills
It’s been made clear that the Golden State Warriors are interested in finding a suitable backup point guard to take the pressure off of Stephen Curry. The two-time MVP is entering his mid-30s and will face a larger load than usual next season, increasing the need for a quality second-string guard to make managing Curry’s minutes easier.
Patty Mills is basically a textbook backup sixth man. He has played nine-strong seasons with the second unit in San Antonio – averaging a career-high 11.7 points per game at 31 years of age.
Mills is a smart player who fills his role admirably. He won’t play out of the system or disrupt the offense by going full hero-mode, but he is capable of torching opposing teams if he is in rhythm.
Transitioning from the Spurs to the Warriors would be easy for Mills as both franchises emphasize an unselfish style of play. Mills is a trade target for the Dubs and should be available for a relatively small price.
