How Golden State Warriors could acquire Devin Booker
By Tony Pesta
Is it possible that the Golden State Warriors could free up enough space to acquire Devin Booker within the next few years? Maybe so.
Draymond Green recently made waves in the media world by stating that Devin Booker needs to leave the Phoenix Suns. He was instantly accused of tampering – but, is it really tampering if the Golden State Warriors won’t have any chance of acquiring the young star?
Booker is having a career-year as the Suns are in playoff contention. He is averaging 26.2 points and 6.6 assists per game on close to 50 percent shooting. So, what could possibly cause the Suns to part ways with Booker?
Well, firstly, he could leave in free agency. The Suns have him on contract until 2024 – but if they are unable to build a team capable of competing for a title by then – Booker could elect to test his luck elsewhere.
This works out perfectly for the Dubs who will have a chance to free up a ton of cap space as Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins’ contracts will be expired by this time. Furthermore, Booker will only be 27 years old – entering his prime and serving as the next face of the franchise.
This sounds like a dream scenario. But, the truth is, anything can happen in four years. We have no idea what circumstances Booker or the Dubs will be under by 2024. If they want to speed up the process and solidify their chances of getting a star – the Dubs could trade for Booker.
This is a much tougher task as it seems impossible the Suns will part ways with the best player they have had in over a decade. For the sake of argument – the Warriors would be able to offer a strong package of multiple first round picks and Wiggins to match salary.
Still, this scenario is far fetched. The Warriors only real chance of getting Booker is by signing him in 2024 but they can’t bank on that ever happening. Green may have made some bold comments but he definitely didn’t tamper.
