The Golden State Warriors have a guaranteed top-five pick, but their odds of dropping all the way down to No. 5 are alarmingly high.

There’s no denying the 2019-2020 season was a tough one for the Golden State Warriors. Not only did they get robbed of 17 games by the coronavirus, but the Warriors, of the 65 they played, won just 15.

We all know it wasn’t because their team wasn’t talented.

The lackluster play had to do with the team’s two superstar-caliber players combining for just five games. Klay Thompson was out with a torn ACL sustained in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals and Curry fractured his hand just four games into the season.

D’Angelo Russell tried but couldn’t carry the team to what even resembled a winning record. Russell was eventually traded for Andrew Wiggins who came in and played 12 games before the league’s suspension.

That’s how they ended up with the league’s worst record, and now they’ll have a franchise-changing pick. However, it may not be as high as every fan is hoping.

According to NBA.com, the Warriors have a 47.9% chance of locking up the No. 5 pick. They have a 14% chance at the No. 1 pick, tied for the highest odds at the top spot with Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks. They have a 40% chance at landing in the top-three as well.

While we always hope for the best, it’s really up in the air as last season’s lottery was won by the New Orleans Pelicans. They drafted Duke phenom, Zion Williamson. The Pelicans had 33 wins and were not in the bottom-six teams in the NBA.

However, maybe the Warriors will get some luck as they’ll have two-time MVP Stephen Curry at the lottery. Curry will be the team’s representative. That said, the lottery is set to take place on ESPN Thursday, August 20, 2020.
