Golden State Warriors: Stop with the Devin Booker trade rumors
By Tony Pesta
It’s time for the Golden State Warriors, and everyone else, to stop with the Devin Booker trade rumors that have taken place recently.
Trade rumors have become a key part of being an NBA fan. Every year, especially in the offseason, the media relentlessly hits us with different rumors regarding star players. Most recently, there has been speculation that the Golden State Warriors will swing big for Devin Booker.
It doesn’t take much explaining to see why the Dubs would be interested in the Phoneix Suns’ superstar. At just 23 years of age, Booker has already stapled himself as one of the league’s best scorers. His leaps in playmaking and defense have made him a blooming superstar and the Warriors would obviously be thrilled to add him to their roster.
With the No. 2 overall pick and a number of talented young players, the Dubs are more capable of creating a reasonable trade package than many other teams that might pursue Booker. However, even the best combination of assets in the league won’t be enough to convince the Suns to part ways with Booker. At least, not yet.
Booker just finished the first season of a five-year max extension with the Suns. He is on contract through the 2023-24 season and won’t have a chance to hit the free-agent market until 2024. This alone is enough reason for the Suns to cling tight to their first star since Steve Nash.
Furthermore, the Suns feel they are excruciatingly close to building a competitive team around Booker. The offseason additions of Kelly Oubre Jr, Cam Johnson and Rick Rubio helped them battle for a playoff berth and the improvements to Mikal Bridges have them knocking on the door of taking another step forward. Not to mention, a double-double machine in Deandre Ayton.
The Suns have a solid young core and a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft. There is no reason for them to even consider trading Booker to any team. At least, for now. If the franchise somehow takes a big step backward next season, then we can resume these trade talks.
