Golden State Warriors hopes of trading for a star might be flimsy

The Golden State Warriors undoubtedly have the assets needed to pull off a major trade – but their hopes of this happening might be futile.

All is well for the Golden State Warriors right now. The Splash Brothers are set to return at full strength next season with a supporting cast featuring the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year and a former No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick in Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins.

However, we can’t help but feel this team is missing some of the depth that made them so deadly in years passed. The likes of Harrison Barnes, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Landro Barbosa, Andrew Bogut and Shaun Livingston are long gone. Next season, the Dubs have to put it all together without a trusty veteran presence to lead the way.

This has many thinking the same thing – the Dubs need another star. Something to put them over the top again. Wiggins is a great pickup considering the circumstances the franchise was in when they lost Durant but I think most can agree his potential is limited as he has yet to live up to his pre-draft hype. Wiggins is set to make close to  $100 million in the next three seasons, a price that could hurt the Warriors longterm.

Nonetheless, the franchise has some hope that combining Wiggins and their upcoming NBA Draft pick could be enough to swing a star such as Rudy Gobert, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid or Bradley Beal their way. An additional first round pick from Minnesota could be enough to sway some teams in trade negotiations.

Sadly, these hopes are flimsy. The Warriors have a decent package to offer but not enough to force anybody’s hand. The Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards are not desperate to trade their stars just yet and will likely wait until at least the deadline to seriously consider a swap. This renders the Warriors No. 2 overall pick useless in trade talks and leaves Wiggins as their most valuable asset.

As a result, it seems unlikely the Warriors manage to catch the big fish this season. Perhaps they can still orchestrate a mega-deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo next summer. Until then, the front office should focus on adding quality role players to the roster.
