The Golden State Warriors want to prioritize adding a solid backup point guard this offseason. On a budget, could Chicago’s Kris Dunn be a top option for them?

There’s no denying improving this offseason may be tough for the Golden State Warriors given that they already roster four max-value contracts. Those four are Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson.

That said, the Warriors are going to prioritize adding a backup point guard this offseason. With what money is a different question, but they’ll have partially-guaranteed contracts they can get off if they view said guard as an important factor in a potential return to the NBA Finals.

That’s a tough sell though.

They already have the young Ky Bowman on the roster, the player currently set to backup Curry. Bowman was a rookie during the 2019-2020 season and played well. He may not have the upside or experience they want for their full-time option behind Curry.

With players soon to be available, could Kris Dunn be an option?

The answer is yes, but if he fits their budget is the real question. Dunn, since being a top-five pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, has done the opposite of Zach LaVine. Dunn has taken a step back since being traded from Minnesota to Chicago.

He notched double figures for two years yet saw that drop to 7.3 points per game this past season, averaging under 27% from downtown. A free agent, Dunn did average 2.0 steals and his value as a defender is still there.

That could be what gets the guard entering his fifth year above a minimum-value deal. Dunn came out of college with a low ceiling. He’s clearly not hit that yet, but as with Andrew Wiggins, Dunn could thrive in the right situation.

With the shooting to help the Dubs, the defensive aptitude, and the need for a winning culture (Dunn has yet to be an over .500 team in the NBA), the Warriors and Dunn are a match made in heaven.

Let’s just hope both parties think that when free agency opens up some time in the next few months.
