Entering the 2020 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors will be seriously considering a number of prospects, including Obi Toppin.

We are officially at the point where the Golden State Warriors have delivered so many smokescreens it’s impossible to decipher exactly what their intentions are for the 2020 NBA Draft. Most recently, we have heard the Dubs are going to seriously consider Obi Toppin at the No. 2 spot.

Prior to John Hollinger of The Athletic breaking this news, it was assumed that Toppin would only be on the Dubs radar in the even they trade back in the lottery. However, Hollinger suggests the Warriors will be considering Toppin even if they remain with the second pick.

This is an interesting revelation as Toppin has some major gaps in his game that might never be fixed. Barring any major changes, Toppin will enter the league as a liability defensively. Becoming worse on this end of the floor isn’t something the Warriors should be looking to do in the offseason.

Perhaps it is Toppin’s potential on offense that has the Warriors reportedly so high on him. Toppin averaged 20.0 points on above 60 percent shooting last season and will be an instant contributor to whatever team he is drafted by.

However, it feels more likely this report is nothing more than a bluff from the Dubs. There really isn’t much of a case for the franchise to select Toppin over other prospects such as James Wiseman, Anthony Edwards, Onyeke Okongwu or LaMelo Ball. Furthermore, there remains the possibility of the Warriors trading the pick altogether.

Nonetheless, this report is the latest of many that have attempted to guess the Warriors’ intentions. By next week, we will probably hear the Dubs targetting another prospect. The truth is, we just won’t know what Golden State is going to do in the draft until the event takes place on November 18.
