Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is a two time MVP but has not won the award since Kevin Durant joined the team. With a healthy roster going into the next season, can he return to MVP status?

Stephen Curry was once a unanimous MVP before Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in 2017. Since the move, Curry has not been a candidate for the award.

It is hard to win the award when you have a lineup of four all-stars, and one of them is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history in Kevin Durant.

Steph won his last MVP award in 2016 when he lead the league in points with 30 a game. While also averaging five rebounds and six assists a game. In May of 2016, Stephen Curry became the first-ever unanimous MVP.

That season was something special, but how does he get back to that status? He has a few things working in his favor this season to reclaim the award.

A Healthy Warriors Roster

The Warriors finished last season with the worst record in the league. They also had the biggest injuries in terms of their stars being hurt.

Klay Thompson was already out for the season, after tearing his ACL in the 2019 NBA finals against Toronto. Just three games into the start of last season, Stephen Curry broke his wrist during the fourth game against the Phoenix Suns.

He did return to play one more game later in the season and would have maybe played a few more had the season not been paused due to the virus.

A healthy roster around him will definitely help boost his name back into the discussion. Players like Klay and Draymond Green will be huge keys to Curry’s success.

No more Durant on the Warriors

In the past few years, Steph Curry has had to compete with his own teammate for the award. Kevin Durant has won an MVP of his own and is often referred to as a top-three player in the league.

The amazing play of Kevin Durant sometimes led to Steph being overlooked as the league’s most valuable player. However, during the time that Steph was not playing and Durant was, the Warriors would be having trouble. But when Durant was out, and Curry was in, it was pretty obvious who the more valuable player was.

Steph will put on a show this season like he does every season. If he can take this team back to the top, he is a sure pick at the league’s Most Valuable Player once again.
