Golden State Warriors NBA Draft: Predicting first 5 picks
By Tony Pesta
Despite many fans calling for the Cleveland Cavaliers to draft a perimeter-oriented defender such as Isaac Okoro, the franchise appears to be heavily favoring the likes of Obi Toppin and Deni Avdija. It’s 50/50 who they take – but we are going to guess the Cavs take Toppin in this scenario.
Toppin was one of the best 3-point shooting bigs in the NCAA last year and should transition as a floor spacer quickly in the NBA. He is going to score in bunches as a catch-and-shoot threat that can also run in transition and finish around the rim. His post-game might not work as well against professional defenders but there is potential for him to bang down low as well with his bulky frame.
While the Cavs are desperate for additional defenders, Toppin can fill in their need for 3-point shooters. Adding Toppin to the Cavs offense will help open things up for their young backcourt to create plays for others.
With rumors emerging that Cleveland will be looking to trade Andre Drummond and likely lose Tristan Thompson in free agency – the path for Toppin to play big minutes from day one is emerging.
