At possibly the worst time for the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson has reportedly injured his leg during practice.
Just moments before the 2020 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors felt confident in their chances to build a championship-caliber team around a healthy Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. Now, everything is potentially in jeopardy as Thompson’s future lies in uncertainty.
According to multiple reports, Thompson suffered a lower leg injury during practice. Significantly, this injury is on his right leg – not the one he injured in the 2019 NBA Finals. While this may seem like good news – it could also be a deadly indication that his torn ACL was only the beginning of reoccurring mishaps.
Leg injuries are tricky in the NBA. Injuring one limb can easily lead to you overcompensating on the other. As a result, it isn’t uncommon for players to make failed comebacks after tearing notable ligaments. This is a scary sight for Thompson who is now 30 years old and fresh off a grueling five-year stretch of basketball.
Thompson is set to have an MRI soon to discover the severity of his injury. Hopefully, this is something minor that can be healed quickly. After all, the season begins in roughly a month. With a shortened schedule, there isn’t much time for Thompson to waste.
As for the upcoming draft, there is no telling what the Dubs may do now. Do they overreact and look to take a guard like LaMelo Ball or Killian Hayes to patch up a potential gap in the lineup? Do they trade for a star that can replace Thompson? Or do they stick to their guns and stay true to their original plan (whatever that may have been).
Anthony Slater has reported that the entire Warriors brain trust is meeting to determine the next move. It could be a pivotal one – and much of it comes down to the severity of Thompson’s injury. Here’s to hoping for the best.
