His contract isn’t outrageous and is for one year

The Warriors added Kelly Oubre Jr. with their trade exception. He is on the last year of his contract as well and is set to make just over $14 million. The team will pay almost four times as much in a luxury tax penalty by adding Oubre Jr.

It would get even uglier if they add Williams.

His $8 million contract may already be enough to shy Joe Lacob away. Lacob has time and time again proven that he’ll do what it takes to win, but if Williams makes that difference between the team truly contending and not contending is a question Lacob must answer.

He’s been a terrific owner, one that’s brought success and fame to the Warriors. He’s already paid a great price for Oubre Jr. The team has a few other exceptions like the mid-level exception available, so they could opt for a cheaper player.

But, his contract is good, and it does fit under the DPE. It expires at the end of the season as well which is good for future cap structure as well. It’s a worthy risk, and it is a risk that the team should want to make.
