No matter how hard you look, you won’t find a player that fits alongside Stephen Curry as perfectly as Klay Thompson did. Search through the history of the league and you would be hard-pressed to find a more quality 3-and-D player than Thompson.
Nonetheless, the Warriors should understand they need to substitute some of Thompson’s production with somebody. They already addressed some of their defensive woes by hauling in Kelly Oubre Jr. and Brad Wanamaker. Now, they should target a pure 3-point shooter than can play bursts of minutes throughout the year.
Doug McDermott can fill in as a catch-and-shoot threat instantly. He drilled a career-high 128 total 3-pointers last season on 43.5 percent shooting. There’s no doubt he would benefit the Warriors’ spacing as a presence on the bench.
McDermott is set to become a free agent at the end of the season – making him an ideal candidate for trade as the DPE is only eligible to be used in trades for expiring contracts.
