6. Portland Trail Blazers

Every single year we consider the Portland Trail Blazers to be the league’s ‘dark horse’ contender. And well, with a heavyweight puncher like Damian Lillard commanding the team, anything is possible. We’ve seen how a hot streak from Lillard can thrust the Blazers to the Western Conference Finals – but how much further can they go? This is the year to find out.

Additions like Robert Covington and Derrick Jones Jr. add the type of perimeter depth the Blazers have been sorely lacking. Don’t forget, a healthy Rodney Hood could make a difference on the wing as well.

The only weak spot in the rotation is in the frontcourt, but Jusuf Nurkic will help alleviate those pains. This roster is as good as it’s ever been and the time is now for Lillard to solidify himself as a top player.

5. Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic just might be the greatest 20-year-old basketball player of all-time. The show he has put on through two seasons is unparalleled and he is at the front of MVP predictions for a reason. Doncic is one step away from being the most well-rounded player in the league.

Of course, he has to improve on defense. Yet, we can assume this will get better with age and as the team provides him with more assistance. The addition of Josh Richardson, a versatile perimeter defender, will hopefully help patch up some of the Mavericks’ woes.

Much of the Mavericks’ success will depend on Kristaps Porzingis. He is a perfect match to pair with Doncic, but health has been an ongoing problem for the 7-footer. If all works out, the Mavericks will be an elite team in the West.
