Contract

Aron Baynes is owed $6.9 million this season and then had a team option worth a little bit more next season. It’s expected that whether traded or retained that the option isn’t going to be picked up.

Now, the positive surrounding that figure is that it’s under the disabled player exception.

After Klay Thompson‘s season-ending Achilles injury, the team was gifted a $9.3 million exception, but it’s unclear whether they’ll use it or not after using their trade exception on Kelly Oubre Jr. during the offseason.

Let’s be honest though. There’s no expectation for Joe Lacob and the ownership team to use the DPE.

However, they’ve been doing what it takes to allow this team to compete. That said, it feels unlikely that they’d view Baynes as a good enough addition for the team to add such an expensive piece for.

Baynes is a good target, but like another others, he comes with his downside which is tied to hit potential cost for Lacob. He does fall under the DPE though, so it is possible.
